Mumbai: College students in a fix over certificates issue

Aspiring lawyers from the reserved category were in for a rude shock yesterday, when amid admission chaos, they were asked to submit non-creamy layer certificates immediately. As per rules, every institution can give admissions to these students, subject to submission of the said certificate.

Law admissions this year are chaotic with new issues cropping up every now and then. Admissions were stalled for prolonged time, thanks to questions raised by Bar Council of India (BCI) on approvals of many colleges from the state. Finally when the first round of admissions was held, there were several goof-ups ranging from candidates getting faraway colleges, to many not being allotted any seat. Yesterday, students from the reserved category were asked to present the certificates immediately.

“Already there was so much confusion about admission. Nobody got the certificate. When finally seats were allotted, we were asked to submit the certificate immediately. It is a government document, which takes time to acquire,” said Nupur Chikhale, a student.

“It was scary because I felt I might miss admission. Already we waited so long for the admissions to finally begin,” said Rutuja Salve, another candidate.

Worried students approached the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell. Chandrashekhar Oak, Commissioner of the Cell, said, “We have issued a circular to colleges saying they should not restrict any student’s admission for want of this certificate. Instead they can take an undertaking from candidates that their admission will be subject to the submission of non-creamy layer certificate within a given deadline.”
