Pune: The Gourmet Renaissance Indian St Leger (Gr 1), the fifth and the final Classic of the 2015-16 racing calendar, will be run at the Pune monsoon track on Saturday. Despite the rich stakes of Rs 6 million on offer, only seven four-year-olds have entered the fray, and this sparse participation may have a lot to do with the presence of trainer S Padmanabhan's Desert God in the fray.
The champion colt by Burden of Proof out of Running Flame has not lost a single race this season, and will be bidding for a ninth straight win, having won overall 11 races from 16 starts during his peripatetic career, scoring victories at all Indian racetracks except Mysore.

Desert God, winner of both the Indian Derby (Mahalaxmi, Mumbai) and the Invitation Cup (Chennai), has already surpassed Quasar's record as the greatest stakes money earner when he won the grade 1, President of India Gold Cup at Hyderabad less than two weeks ago, and should he win the Indian St Leger today (which, the experts feel, is a foregone conclusion), he will take his career earnings beyond an astronomical Rs 7 crore-mark. Trainer Padmanabhan owns the horse in partnership with his wife Sharmila.
A nine-race card is framed for today, and the Gourmet Renaissance Indian St Leger is slated at 4 pm, as the sixth race on the card.
