Mumbai cop suicide attempt

A suicide bid and the consequent fallout was averted yesterday after senior railways officers took a serious note of a letter written by a head constable of the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The constable had written the letter almost a month ago to protest his transfer from Surat to Churchgate station.

The 50-year-old constable, Dayashankar Mishra, got his transfer orders a month ago and had written a letter asking the authorities to reconsider the decision since his tenure at Surat had not ended, but he did not receive any reply.

He wrote another letter 15 days earlier, where he detailed out his plan of committing suicide, which the railway officials took seriously and alerted the Nagpada police.

As per his plan, Mishra turned up at the campus of RPF station, Mumbai Central, yesterday at 9.30 am with an inflammable liquid and threatened to douse himself but was apprehended by the Nagpada police officers and was handed over to the RPF and GRP officers, who were also present at the scene.

“He was counselled (by RPF Assistant Security Commissioner Ashim Kumar Mondal) and was asked to come through the proper channel to appeal against the transfer. We assured him that his problems would be looked into,” said Anand Jha, senior divisional security commissioner, RPF, Western Railway.

Mishra, who has a dented reputation, was given this transfer as a punishment posting.

At 3.34 pm, he was allowed to go with a notice under section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which was issued by the Nagpada police.
