The fad that is fancy number plates refuses to die down, with people pay thousands and lakhs of rupees to get special numbers on their vehicle registration plates, including single and double digit ones. But the transport department has finally decided that it’s having none of that. It has now made it mandatory to have 0 before any number between 1 and 999.

The move is aimed at tackling what officials call the menace of special numbers increasingly being found on vehicles, especially on those pasting stickers affiliated to political parties.

The new directive
As per the new directive issued by the state transport department to their Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Maharashtra, if the number plate on a vehicle does not have four digits, then it needs to be repainted and zero added at the start of the number.

For example, if the vehicle registration number is 5, then its owner will have to get it changed to 0005, or if it’s 777, then it will have to be made 0777.

The directive has been issued based on suggestions made by the estimate committee of the state legislature.

There are many vehicles in Mumbai having designer fancy numbers, which, in a majority of cases, are asked for as a way to show off or display power, said officials.
