State Tourism authorities marked World Tourism Day yesterday (September 27) by launching Mumbai Darshan tours for the specially abled. The theme for the day was ‘accessible tourism for all’. Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) deserves a round of applause for undertaking the initiative, but we need to ensure that these tours are sustained in the long run.

Gradually but eventually, our tourist spots also need to be made suitable for the specially abled. Initiatives should be taken to make our various modes of transportation accessible to all sections of the society.

But before that, authorities must some small changes in the tourism sector as a whole. First, we need more garbage disposal options and dustbins at and around tourist spots.

Civic authorities should also consider roping in corporate houses to sponsor clean and well-maintained selfie spots at places frequented by tourists. Incorporating better signage to reach a destination or even exit a tourist spot will help. Tourists, especially foreigners, wandering about a place asking for directions is a shameful reality in our country. The few help and information kiosk around tourist hubs routinely remain unmanned or with clueless personnel.

Efforts need to be taken to improve sanitation facilities at these sites. And in this regard, constructing clean, usable toilets should be the first priority because lack of hygiene is a major turn off for a majority of tourists.

Last but not the least, measures should be taken to ensure tourists are not allowed to vandalise public property by scribbling their names on rocks among other things.

Let us smash the stereotype of the disrespectful Indian tourist who cares two hoots for public property and become proud ambassadors of our states and our country.
