mid-day editorial: Let's steer towards road safety

It will surprise no one to learn that Mumbai’s worst roads are also the most fatal ones. This has finally been confirmed in a survey by the Mumbai Traffic Department, which has identified 30 ‘black spots’ that are in the worst condition and also witness the maximum number of deaths. According to the report, 302 lives have been claimed till July this year by this ‘holey’ menace.

This study by the traffic department’s Crash Analysis Unit (CAU) has shown that bad roads are directly connected to the number of accidents and deaths. Let the civic authorities now bring in a non-negotiable approach to tackle this vexing issue of potholes. Lampooned in publications, evoking so much ire and anger, the authorities need to take full and final responsibility and see that these potholes are filled in.

The time to pass the buck has long passed, and humour — whether black or white — has become as stale as the condition of roads in our state, especially during monsoon. It’s time the authorities take some real action instead of studying the numerous reports of damage and counting the number of lives lost.

Civic authorities and the traffic department must take up repairwork of the 30 ‘black spots’ at the earliest. Consider solutions to reducing accidents even as you pave way for a smoother and less accident-prone future.

But the onus should not just rest on the authorities to reduce fatalities. Motorists and pedestrians must also exercise a little caution.

Motorists and bikers should not need awareness programmes to remind them of the dangers of speeding or driving without helmets or seatbelts. Pedestrians, too, need to be responsible while crossing roads and junctions.

After all, good roads and good road etiquette go together.
