In a heart-wrenching incident, a three-day-old boy, wrapped in a plastic bag, was found in a ladies compartment in a suburban local yesterday morning. The infant was later shifted to the Sion hospital. The case is now with the Dadar Government Railway Police (GRP), who rushed the baby to the hospital for medical examination.

It was one of the female commuters who pulled the chain of the Thane-bound train after she discovered the abandoned baby in the compartment. The GRP officials took custody of the baby after the train halted at Chinchpokli station. The baby was taken to Sion hospital around 9.45 am where the doctors, after examination, confirmed his age.

Sion Hospital Dean Dr Suleiman Merchant said, “It’s a three-day-old baby, weighing 1.75 kg. The condition of the baby is stable and he is taking feeds. We immediately admitted him in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).”

He also said that it was necessary to make people aware that if the situation compels them to abandon their baby, then they should do it in a more humane way. Instead of abandoning babies at stations, on roads or in trains, they should anonymously leave them at an orphanage.

Dr Merchant said that the baby could have died had the lady not spotted him. Senior Police Inspector Prakash Kirdat of the Dadar GRP said, “We have registered a case under Section 317 of the IPC against an unidentified woman for abandoning the baby. The baby has been admitted to Sion hospital.”u00a0
