The case
On Nov 11, 2006, alleged Chhota Rajan aide Lakhan Bhaiya was killed in an encounter at Versova. According to the police, Gupta had fired on them and they fired back in self-defence, which led to his death.

Lakhan's brother, advocate Ram Prasad Gupta, had filed a petition in the High Court alleging that the victim had been shot dead in cold blood by a police team headed by Sharma.

According to the petitioner, police picked up Lakhan from his house seven hours prior to his death. His family members had then filed a complaint with police fearing that he may be killed in an encounter.

The court eventually set up a special investigative team helmed by then DCP Prasanna to investigate the case.

Pradeep Sharma was arrested along with other policemen in 2010.
