It's a culinary slugfest that's unfolding at the Gateway of India, the kind that would get my nephew excited if he were watching Smackdown VS Raw. Chef and restaurateur Moshe Shek has decided to give Rahul Akerkar and company, if not competition, by opening his cafe 5 feet away from Akerkar's Indigo Deli, separated by little more than a sliver of a furnishing shop. There's not too much room here; two tables at ground level, and a couple more on a mezzanine that you get to via a tricky wooden staircase.

French Toast Rs 150

We tried: The Chicken Steak with garlic, lime, ratatouille and watercress (Rs 195) was a flatbread sandwich that made for a filling evening snack. The light sweetish tinge of mayo was balanced with the slightly bitter aftertaste of rocket, and the handmade bread that held it all together was the star of the show; like a crisp toadstool top, sliced through the centre, opening with the drama of an oyster shell. The fries could have been crisper, fresher. Their smoothies and freshers are innovative. The Fruit Cyclone is a tangerine-coloured concoction of papaya, pineapple, watermelon, banana and orange (Rs 95). If you in the mood for pasta, go for the garlic, chive, cream and spinach pasta (Rs 195).u00a0

Also on the menu: Crostinis, eggs and omelets with various fillings, salads, pancakes, coffees, teas, desserts (eggless too).

We loved: The French Toast (Rs 150) doesn't look, taste or feel like French Toast. It's round, it's baked, not fried and is made with panattone bread, with the delicate taste of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla bean, dusted lightly with sugar. Not too sweet, just right, it tastes divine with maple syrup.

Carry home: Don't walk away without picking up some of their homemade dips and breads; they really are some of the best in the city, although a bit pricey. The flavoured butter (Strawberry, Kiwi, Lemon for Rs 95) taste super on bread or waffles. The Orange and Pomelo Jam (Rs 75), Walnut and Rasin Bread loaf (Rs 45), Baladi bread (Egyptian whole wheat bread for Rs 20) and Tapenade (olives, roast tomato, garlic, basil, olive oil for Rs 90) are our favourites.

Service: Though our steward was polite and doing his best, we thought he was aching for help. They need to pump up staff so that we get our order on time. One of the air-conditioners on level 1 wasn't functioning, and that made it a claustrophobic experience, especially after we'd done sipping on Mint Tea (which was perfect by the way, Rs 65).

At: Apollo Bunder, opposite Dhanraj Mahal. Open from 8 am to midnight.
Home delivery till Churchgate; free with orders over Rs 350, else you pay Rs 60 per delivery.

Call: 22020934 / 22021205
