In its second year, the Vinod Doshi Memorial Theatre Festival showcases the best of experimental theatre in Hindi and Marathi

This week, theatre lovers get a rare chance to watch some of the best contemporary, experimental productions as part of the Vinod Doshi Memorial Theatre Festival.

The festival is held in memory of the late chairman of Premier Automobiles Ltd, Vinod Doshi, who prided himself as a strong supporter of experimental theatre.

In keeping with the patron's preference, the festival encourages young dramatists who are not scared to take risks in their productions.

That's why we have selected plays that reflect creativity and talent on the part of the director and playwright," explains Ashok Kulkarni, co-curator of the festival along with theatre personalities Satish Alekar and Sunil Shanbag.

The festival also aims to promote youngsters aspiring for a career in theatre. That explains the inclusion of plays Geli Ekvees Varsha and Afsaneh-Bai se Bioscope, featuring an ensemble cast under 25 years.

"Dharmakirti Sumant (the playwright of Geli Ekvees Varsha) is only 21, and he has written a fantastic play based on his life," says Kulkarni.

Who was Vinod Doshi?

Vinod Doshi was an eminent industrialist and Chairman of The Premier Automobiles Ltd.

He was closely associated with and headed many national business bodies including CII, IMTMA, SIAM, ARAI and MEDC as well as educational institutions and government and semi-government organisations. But his real passion was theatre and the arts.

Theatre veterans fondly recall spending days rehearsing their plays in his home, Walchand Terrace, and instances when he would go out of his way to help a theatre group or artiste for the sheer love of the art form.
