Long distance relationships

Do long distance relationships work? Are men and women designed in such a way that they would remain inclined towards each other inspite of living in separate lands for long? I'm not just talking about mental stimulation here. I'm going down to the basics; the very basis of every relationship, without any qualms whatsoever.

If you'd like to just string along life, then you can survive many years despite being far away from your loved one. But if you are the one who truly feels you have found a soul mate, with a disclaimer, which is that he or she lives in some other country or state and you happen to meet only once in a couple of months, then isn't it a real challenge to keep the spark going?

A friend of mine once congratulated a guy on his fiftieth wedding anniversary and asked him how he survived those many years and pat came the reply, that he left his wife on their honeymoon in Hawaii and he was now going to get her back!

However my point here is something different. What if your career move puts you in a long-distance relationship? I gather that people don't intentionally choose a long-distance relationship, but at times a situation like that might spring up. What would you do in such a case? Wait patiently for your love? Or play hanky panky? How long do people really wait? How long can they wait? Is there an answer?

A friend of mine recently gave up on his relationship only for the reason that the longing was slowly fading away in his long-distance love and what remained was only the distance. For a few million couples in the US and a few lesser millions in India too, it's phone sex that kept them going.

But what next? This is the age of instant gratification. And no, that doesn't mean taking the example of this friend of mine working as an HR of a BPO firm who recently told me that they had to order acid cleaning in bulk as the pipes of their office restrooms were choked with condoms.

But, when even time and tide wait for none, how could a virtue as innocent as love wait?

Tech gadgets and gizmos have changed the face of communication and have brought us all closer to an extent, but, can love really survive sans any physical intimacy? Do mail me your views!
