A request to have a less gruelling schedule for the Ranji Trophy has been considered by the powers that be.

Longer breaks on cards in domestic cricket

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) technical committee, headed by former India captain Anil Kumble, met at its headquarters yesterday to discuss the feedback received during the Captains and Coaches Conclave held earlier this month.

In the last Ranji season, all 27 teams played a minimum of eight matches with a break of three days in between. During the Captains and Coaches Conclave, the teams were unanimous in asking for longer breaks between matches.

Four-day break
Kumble said they are looking to provide a four-day break. “We felt initially at the start of the season, a three-day break is good enough. But we will certainly look at a minimum of a four-day break.

This was just a preliminary meeting. We discussed the outcome of the Captains and Coaches Conclave. We will again meet in April and will get into what needs to be recommended to the BCCI for the coming season,” Kumble said at the end of the three-hour meeting.

Kumble informed that there was a discussion on the weather aspect in domestic cricket. “There was also a discussion about the weather in various parts of India — winter in the north, east and certain parts of central, and certain parts of south has little bit of late monsoon. We will make recommendations to the fixtures committee to look at all these aspects when they finalise the schedule,” said legendary leg-spinner.

On the issue of staging Ranji Trophy knockout games at neutral venues, Kumble said it is important to identify neutral venues. “More than (playing at) the neutral venues, what has been recommended is a suggestive list of neutral venues. In the coming season, we don’t have much of international cricket in India,” Kumble said.u00a0
