Kids can let their imagination run wild and create a desi mythical superhero

Look ma! I made my own superhero

Exhibits like  Mahishasurmardini at CSMVS’s sculpture gallery will serve as inspiration for kids to create their superheroes

While politics may make you question the type of heroes we create, kids can have a go at creating their versions. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) with The Museum Society of Mumbai is organising a an art workshop that is part of the museum’s Catch Them Young motto. Organised by Madhumita Srivastava, Anika Gupta and Rachana Devidayal Shah the two-hour-long workshop, Heroes and Demons will take off this weekend.

Srivastava has a Masters degree in Fine Art (Design and Technology) with a specialisation in Broadcast Design and Motion Graphics. She has been a visual design consultant and has also been teaching for the last 16 years. Gupta, a Fine Arts degree holder in Fashion Design, was awarded Designer of the Year by Parsons School of Design in New York City. She has worked and taught in New York, London and Casablanca and has designed for publishers such as Dorling Kindersley, Scholastic, HarperCollins, and Random House.

“The three of us are qualified teachers and have worked together in the past and felt that the city lacks creative avenues for kids. Many workshops are conducted by those who don’t have a teaching or art background,” feels Shah, who is also a graphic designer. “We understand each other’s teaching techniques, are experienced with teaching different ages and felt that the museum is the best place to begin as it has so many stories. It’s how we decided to conduct the workshop,” shares Gupta.

Post a freewheeling chat and a look at some of the exhibits in the sculpture gallery, including the Narasimha, Nruvaraha and the Mahishasurmardini, using them as inspiration, kids can learn to make their own hero/demon/mythical entity and construct a narrative that drives their character and endow it with special super powers. They will make their hand-held creature in detail and technicolour, playing with shape, colour and pattern to heighten the drama using a variety of materials like paint, wool, buttons, sequins and even 3D objects.

“Many schools focus on the perfection of the end product when it comes to art. The idea is for it to just be a form of expression. Through this workshop kids can explore and create a work of art in a visual language and style of their own. It’s not about the beauty of the piece, but about fuelling imagination,” says Srivastava. “For our first project, we chose a few pieces whose back-stories would interest the kids. The ones that have part-man, part-animal features, a mix of human and divine and even the Shakti (power) of devis who slay demons are the kind kids are most drawn to. How they change form is almost Harry Potter-like. Using this as reference kids can create their own and take home a superhero,” she shares.
