Love stories with Mrs Ippi

Once a part of Delhi-based Big Bang Blues, vocalist Ipshita Roy has toured the entire country. Last year, marriage brought her to Mumbai. “I am here to explore possibilities,” says the 29-year-old.

Under the moniker, Mrs Ippi Duo — comprising her pianist friend, Rythem Bansal — Roy will sketch her musical, and her journey, at a gig tonight. Bass player Abhinav Khokhar makes a special appearance. Roy has worked with session musicians, and over the years, written a variety of tunes. “My music is influenced by Jazz and Blues; that’s what my sound has become of late.

Expect such inspirations at her first gig in the city in the new set-up. “I will present renditions of some of my loved tunes; Jazz standards as well as covers. Among the originals is the first single I released with a video on YouTube. It is a song called Your Love; I wrote it for my husband,” she smiles.

Her music is not just about mushy tunes. In one song, Regret or Question, she asks pertinent and personal questions. “You tend to look back at certain situations and wonder whether it was wise for you to have acted the way you did. The song is about that dilemma,” adds Roy. “I think it is one of my best efforts till date.”

Also, keep an ear out for Time Capsule, a track on on Latin music template. There will also be a Bengali rendition of the song. “It is a story about two lovers meeting without knowing the outcome of their relationship in the long run,” says Roy.

Roy will try out a few songs by American Jazz singer, Melody Gardot. “Her music is subtle and sublime. It is absolutely refreshing. You will never be bored. I am doing a song called Quiet Fire (a typical Blues groove with haunting vocals),” says Roy. The other covers include Whitney Houston’s I’m Your Baby Tonight. If you can’t catch her gig tonight, Roy plans to cut an EP by the end of the year.
