Defender Ramiro Funes put his side ahead at the stroke of half-time before City winger Gonzalez Jesus Navas levelled the score by smashing an equaliser in the 76th minute, the Guardian reported.
It was just two minutes later when Lukaku netted the match-winning goal for his side to gave them 2-1 lead against Everton, but was substituted immediately afterwards due to injury.
Everton will now play in the semi-final second leg against Manuel Pellegrini-led side on January 28.
