Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam’s wife Geeta has decried the below-the-belt attacks on her and her family for her husband’s allegation that the surgical strike carried out in PoK was fake and that the government must give proof to establish its authenticity.

Geeta has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through her personal blog, telling him that her mother-in-law was abused in the most vulgar language on social media, and she too was being abused and accused in the most demeaning manner, not only on social media but even via phone calls.

Nirupam’s wife was referring to social media trolls, memes, videos and text messages that have been circulating from the day the Congressman made the controversial claim.

“We live in a democratic country, where freedom of speech is the basic birthright of every Indian. Yes, my husband said something that was clearly political in nature, he simply expressed his viewpoint, which could have easily been discussed/debated intellectually amongst political rivals and even commoners,” she wrote on Friday.

She said her husband was talking about the nation and politics, not about his personal life and family. “So, why is this so-called culture and family-oriented nation — that otherwise worships ‘the Devi (goddess)’ — dragging his 80-year-old mother into this political drama and abusing her by using the most vulgar language possible on social media?”

‘Abused in the most vulgar way’
She said she was being abused in the most vulgar and demeaning manner possible not only on social media but even via phone calls. “What have we done to deserve this social disgrace? Is this how you would like your own mother and wife to be treated if you make a political comment or express your political opinion? Is not your profession different from your family life?” she said.

“Not reacting to the mass hysteria is as good as supporting and participating in it, I am very sad to say that those who can abuse a mother can never ever respect Mother India — so, they should stop this hypocrisy in the name of the nation,” she said in an apparent barb against Modi Bhakts.

‘Feeling unsafe in my country’
Geeta said she feels unsafe in her own country. “When Ms Kiran Rao stated that this country is not safe in today’s regime, this pretentious country felt bad and upset about it. With due respect to all the ‘respectful’ individuals/celebrities/political leaders/intellectuals who felt insulted that she felt unsafe, after today, even I want to say, I feel unsafe in my own country.”

She appealed to the PM to press the stop button and at least make sure that there is some censorship, some monitoring of the language used on mass media.

“Politics is not a family game, so, can we stop dragging families into it? Has nobody ever spoken against the government before? Have all their families been abused and threatened to be murdered? Then, why are my husband and my family being singled out?” she said.

Reacting to Geeta’s letter, a senior BJP leader said that she should first question her husband and ask him to correct his ways. “No BJP leader has abused Geeta or her mother-in-law. On the other hand, Sanjay Nirupam had made a derogatory remark on Smriti Irani on a national television channel,” he said.
