Mumbai: The Maharashtra government said here today that it would study the feasibility of the Metro-3 project along the coastal road, apparently after protests by residents.

"We are studying the feasibility and possibility of a Metro being run along the coastal road... Seeking inputs from the Netherlands," Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted tonight.

Meanwhile, Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray said, "Heard that Government of Maharashtra has put the Metro 3 project on hold, respecting the sentiments of Mumbaikars and Mumbai.

Great news." "This is a victory of each and every Mumbaikar who voiced their opinion against the Metro which was ill-planned and needs better planning," he tweeted.

"To those who stood up from Girgaum and from Aarey; stood their ground on practical reasons, this is your win. Development is surely needed, but development isn't large scale displacement of people and deforestation. Mumbai needs a mass rapid transport, but not at the cost of Mumbai itself.

Long pending coastal road by BMC would be a boon, when cleared by the Centre," he tweeted.

"The coastal road, proposed by the BMC three years ago, which is yet to be cleared by the Centre, would have options of mass rapid transport across the city," he tweeted.
