Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said his government has approved grade 'A' tourist place status for Deekshabhoomi at Nagpur. "Glad to inform that government approves the highest status for tourism by state, 'A' status, to pilgrimage destination 'Pavitra Deekshabhoomi'(Nagpur)," Fadnavis said.

"It had 'C' status during the previous government. Our government upgraded it from 'C' to 'B' and then 'B' to 'A' as per the revised rules issued last month," the CM tweeted. "This decision is one of our humble tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar as a part of his 125th birth anniversary year celebration," he added.

"It is a part of our efforts to make 'Pavitra Deekshabhoomi' a world-class monument, where Ambedkar took Dhamma Deeksha," Fadnavis said. Places with grade 'A' get money from Centre for upkeep and beautification. Deekshabhoomi is of special importance to Dalits because Ambedkar had converted to Buddhism at this place in 1956.
