Maharashtra teachers' indefinite strike begins

Thousands of university and colleges teachers across Maharashtra on Tuesday went on an indefinite 'cease work' strike demanding implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission among others.

Teachers of government-run primary, middle, secondary school and junior colleges are also on a daylong strike demanding 6th Pay Commission at par with Central institutions.

"University and college teachers from Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Pune, Nashik and other districts of Maharashtra began their indefinite strike at 0630 hours.

They went to their respective colleges and universities on Tuesday, signed the strike muster and went back home," Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisations (MFUCTO) secretary Prof Tapati Mukhopadhyay said.

"The strike will continue till the government implements the teachers demands," Mukhopadhyay said. The teachers will get a 30 per cent hike and the arrears for the last three years if the Sixth Pay Commission is implemented.

MFUCTO is also demanding regularisation of around 10,000 teachers affected by National Eligibility Test and State Eligibility Test qualification criteria.

Meanwhile, Greater Mumbai Secondary Teachers Association president RP Choudhari said, "Teachers of primary, middle, secondary schools and junior colleges will assemble at Azad Maidan at noon for 'Jail Bharo' protest."
