A US survey reveals Americans love making out in the rain. Condom sales figures in Maharashtra reveal maximum bedroom action occurs between July and September. That's reason enough to bring you a guide to the steamiest make-out scenes in Bollywood, and whether you should try them

Make out like a Bollywood star

Eighty three per cent of Americans polled in a recent survey carried out by a leading condom company, voted rain as the best weather to have a good romp.

Mumbai-based sexual health expert Dr Rajiv Anand says the results are not surprising. "In the monsoon, orientation somehow shifts from work to leisure.

Sex and relationships, Make out like a Bollywood star

The easiest available and pleasurable activity for most people is often sexual, and therefore the increase in libido," explains Dr Anand.

Sex, like any other physical activity, energises and invigorates the body. What makes sex stand apart though, is the emotional gratification.

"Physical tiredness gets overlooked in the face of emotional enjoyment and sexual pleasure," says Dr Anand.

Cooler weather is said to help trigger the release of endorphins or feel-good hormones that could up sexual activity.

Now that the weather has been taken care of and you have an expert endorsing why sex is good for you, how about pushing things a notch in the bedroom?

With Bollywood coming of age on screen and in the bedroom, Active! decided to take a leaf out of Bollywood's steamiest scenes diary to give you a quick lesson on how to make love like a star with Dr Anand's take on each scene.

Surge in condom sales
An article earlier published in MiD DAY (February 14) indicated numbers, obtained from consumer reports for the financial year 2009-2010 on condom sales in Maharashtra, that illustrate how both primary (manufacturers) and secondary sellers (wholesalers) registered a peak in sales during Quarter 2.

A representative of Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust, the social wing of Hindustan Latex Limited, India's largest condom manufacturer, says, "It's not unusual for condom sales to peak in Quarter 2. It can be attributed to bad weather restricting outdoor activity. Couples tend to spend more time at home."

Murder (2004)
Bollywood sex lesson: Have sex on the roof to send pleasure levels soaring, or better still, get drenched to the bone.

Sex and relationships, Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat in

The scene: Mallika Sherawat and Emraan Hashmi set desi pulses soaring with their on-screen chemistry in Murder. The sexy duo get physical everywhere, including in a glass elevator, the rooftop of a high rise and a water tank, while Bheege Hoth Tere plays seductively in the background.
Back story: This might be a little tough to pull off, especially in public spaces. It might be a better idea to give it a shot on your terrace or a pal's, since there are less chances of getting busted. Choose a spot that rules out the possibility of being filmed by a nosy neighbour. You don't want to land up as protagonists of an MMS sensation.

Expert take
To enjoy a great physical relationship, partners need to help each other feel disconnected from the outer world and connect with their inner sensuality. This needs ample time, attention and indulgence. Sex without foreplay is dry, and nothing but mutual exploitation.

Aitraaz (2004)
Bollywood sex lesson: Men are sometimes turned on by a dominatrix in the bedroom, though not for long.

Sex and relationships, Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar in

The scene: Priyanka Chopra is married to Akshay Kumar's boss in the film, and also happens to be Akshay's former girlfriend. When a much-married Akshay visits Priyanka's home on a professional call, he finds her in the mood for some seduction.

Back story: The setting: a mansion. The dress code: a slinky white outfit with a string of pearls around the neck. Zero in on your slinkiest outfit in white and wiggle into a pair of comfy stilettos. The make-up should be understated, but apparent. Draw attention to your lips by trying on red lip colour. Priyanka uses her arms to overpower Akshay, so this one is for Power Puff Girls.

Expert take
It may set a guy's pulse racing when he thinks of a seductress out to get him; it's a sort of ego kick, but the excitement is short-lived, say experts. Most men still carry the notion of male supremacy and prefer being initiators of the sexual act. Any situation deviating from the pattern may not be very well accepted. But if you know you are lucky to have landed an unconventional guy who loves experimenting, go for it, girl!

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)
Bollywood sex lesson: Check into a hotel room to kink things up in the bedroom.

Sex and relationships, Rani Mukerji and Shah Rukh Khan in

The scene: We are not going to be judgemental prudes here and discuss the pros and cons of an out-of-marriage relationship, but the interesting detail this film throws up is sex in a new location. Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji are drenched to the bone in an unexpected New York shower, before they decide to check in to a hotel on a sudden whim.

Back story: Looking to imitate SRK's signature casual style? Wear a T-shirt over jeans. Your partner can opt for something in silk as Rani does. Women should remember to use waterproof mascara if you know you are going to steam thing up in the shower or out in the open. Stay away from seedy locations, and how about checking in with fictitious names?

Expert take

Like with both sets of couples in this film, partners often forget to explore their own or their partner's sexuality, leaving the act a mere mechanical and goal-oriented exercise. That's probably why the idea of sex with someone else is a popular fantasy.

1947: Earth (1998)
Bollywood sex lesson: Sometimes, just going for it no-holds barred can do wonders for your libido.

Sex and relationships, 1947: Earth

The scene: Deepa Mehta's Earth showcased a beautiful love story between a masseur (Rahul Khanna) and a nanny (Nandita Das). This one's about tender lovemaking, where the couple give into each other and seem to enjoy sex in its purest, happiest form.

Back story:
The setting is basic. Just a bed. Rahul wears a kurta pyjama in cotton khadi, while Nandita wears a rustic cotton saree. Given that most Indian men's fantasy revolves around the woman in a saree, it might not be such a bad idea to wrap yourself in the six yards just for one night.

Expert take

"There are times when raw sensuality ignites passion," says Dr Anand. "Sex is a release of pent-up passion or impulses, and provides indescribable relief." Making out in a no-frills setting can come with its own share of charm.

Salaam Namaste (2005)
Bollywood sex lesson: A live-in relationship might not always be the best thing to happen to your sex life.

Sex and relationships, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta in

The scene: An urban film, Salaam Namaste tackled live-in relationships through characters played by Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta. There's plenty of necking, cuddling and kissing, but the lovemaking is left to the imagination. While Saif shows off his torso, Preity is covered chastely with a white sheet.
Back story: All the action in this film unfolds in Australia, with the beach playing a very important role. To replicate this one to the T, we suggest you head off for the weekend to a beachside resort. Don't forget to carry sexy beachwear.

Expert take

A live-in relationship is a double-edged sword; it has its perks but it might just sound more exciting to those outside it. Just like in a marriage, there is the danger of taking each other for granted, and sex being reduced to an anytime, mundane activity.

Jism (2003)
Bollywood sex lesson: Engage in foreplay, using ice cubes in a candle-lit room to prolong pleasure.

Sex and relationships, Bipasha Basu in Jism

The scene: Counted among the most erotic Hindi films to be made, Jism has a considerable dose of intimacy between Bipasha Basu and John Abraham. The scene that scores highest on sensuality is the one where John blindfolds Bipasha to indulge in erotic foreplay with a cube of ice.

Back story: This one is all about the setting. The room needs to be done up with candles, white ones preferably. Like John, the guy should stick to the basics. A singlet works fine. For the woman, it's slipping into a man's shirt. Keep a silk scarf handy to work as a blindfold or as a hand tie-me-up. Set a bucket of ice by the bed.

Expert take

Any activity that can arouse and expand your sensuality and your responses to even the slightest touch, can be extremely exciting. Couples need to be open to each other's fantasies and work out what suits them. Props help reduce hang-ups during the building up of passion.

Sex and relationships, Jacqueline Fernandez and Emraan Hashmi in

Sex and relationships, Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh in

Band Baaja Baarat:
Anushka Sharma with Ranveer Singh enaged in a bold intimate scene, where the two exchange a lengthy liplock.u00a0

Sex and relationships, Shefali Shah and Sumeet Raghavan in

Kucch Love Jaisa:
Shefali Shah, who is usually perceived as a simple, intense and serious actor was seen in a bold avatar in the film.

Sex and relationships, John Abraham and Genelia D

Force:
Though it wasn’t raunchy, Genelia D’souza and John Abraham’s bathroom scene definitely grabbed some eyeballs.

Sex and relationships, Randeep Hooda and Mahie Gill in

Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster:
Mahi Gill sheds her clothes but also has a lengthy kissing scene in Tigmanshu Dhulia's film.
