Malad cops convert NC into FIR in robbery case

The very day MiD DAY reported about how officials of the Malad police station registered a non-cognisable (NC) offence instead of a First Information Report (FIR) in a robbery case (‘Valuables stolen from car, but cops don’t file FIR’, April 13), officials called the complainant and did the needful. The action was taken after superiors ordered the assistant police inspector of Malad police station to convert the NC into an FIR.The case was finally registered under sections 379 and 427 of the IPC.

Action taken: MiD DAY’s report on April 13

Complainant Mehmood Qureshi was called by police officials after Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahesh Patil ordered an inquiry into the matter and took his statement on Saturday night.

Qureshi said, “I am thankful to MiD DAY for showing support and help me convert the NC into an FIR. The police, while registering the FIR, were cooperative. They even promised that the case will be cracked soon and help me get back my stolen valuables. The DCP called me in the evening and took my statement.”

A senior officer requesting anonymity said that it wasn’t exactly responsible of the police to swing into action only after the media intervened.

“Police officials should know their duty and remember that they are public servants and help people when they are in need. They must protect the department’s image, which has taken a serious beating of late,” he said. u00a0
