Mallya decries Gujarat liquor ban

Liquor-baron Vijay Mallya criticised the prohibition orders in Gujarat as 'a farce' today.
He was speaking after the recent hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad that claimed over 100 lives.
"Blanket prohibition has never worked in this free world," said Mallya. He said in a statement his United Breweries Group would be ready to work with the Gujarat government in revisiting its alcohol beverage policy.u00a0 Mallya said the liquor prohibition in the state had led to unsupervised production of the illegal, unhygienic and deadly spurious liquor in the state. He said the tragedy should serve as "a wake-up call to our political hypocrites." "Chief Minister Narendra Modi knows fully well that every brand of alcohol is available in the state of Gujarat at two or three times the price charged in neighbouring states. This means that the government of Gujarat is losing thousands of crores in potential revenue." he said in the statement.
The Gujarat government has retaliated to Mallya's comments saying they were "untimely". The state government spokesperson told the media that the liquor baron should keep his policies to himself and not meddle with state politics. He even said that states like kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra where there is no ban has also seen such tragedies from spurious liquor. So his statement blaming the liquor ban in the state for the tragedy does not hold good.
