Says institute didn't inform him for four days about his wife's death

Cheated? Mahesh Kumar says the hospital kept charging him despite his wife Seemla Devi having died.

Seemla Devi, 36, had been admitted to the hospital on August 29 after suffering some complications during an abortion procedure. The patient had been operated upon at R K Maternity Home the previous day, following which she was referred to Max Hospital.

"My wife was kept on ventilator-support at Max for all those days. She was doing well for the first few days but since August 2, I saw her in the same position. Her tongue had slightly come out and there was tape over her eyes. I suspected something was wrong, so, I had informed a few people around, including the nurse and the guards. But instead of looking into the matter they stopped me from going inside the ICU, threatening me with dire consequences.

For four days I was made to see her through a glass pane. During these days they had collected more than one lakh rupees from me. Finally I got frustrated and warned them that until and unless they let me meet my wife, I won't pay the remaining amount. Then on Monday morning the hospital authority informed me that my wife had passed away. This is shocking. How can a hospital do this to any person?" said Mahesh Kumar, Seemla's husband.

Seemla Devi was admitted to R K Maternity Hospital after suffering some complications following an abortion.
According to a relative: "She was having severe pain in her stomach. We had taken her to the concerned hospital for check-up early in the morning, but the doctor advised us to go for an operation. For this they demanded Rs 60,000. After the operation the doctor told us they didn't have the required equipments for post-operative care and referred her to Max Balaji Hospital. She was in a good condition while leaving the hospital."

When contacted, the Medical Superintendent of R K Maternity Hospital, A K Banerjee said: "Seemla had come to our hospital on August 28 but after the surgery when we felt, we couldn't treat her properly due to lack of

equipment, we referred her to Max hospital. Some of our doctors are also working at Max."

The police are investigating the case; no FIR has been registered so far. The post mortem report is awaited.
Mahesh and Seemla had been married for 19 years. He claims that they had three children and didn't want anymore kids. So they decided to go for an abortion.
Seemla's body was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Kalyanvas for post mortem.
