Hyderabad: An unidentified man opened fire to threaten a young woman techie inside an ATM as he robbed her of money and jewellery here on Wednesday, police said.

The incident occurred at the State Bank of India ATM in Yousufguda area around 7.30 a.m. when software engineer Sreelatha was withdrawing money.

The armed man, who was wearing a mask, entered the ATM behind her and asked her to hand over the cash she had and the ornaments she was wearing. When she refused, he opened fire.

A terrified Sreelatha then surrendered the money, gold chain, ear studs and rings to the robber, who also snatched her mobile phone and ATM card. He also forced her to reveal the PIN number.

After the crime, the man fled the ATM, which had no security guard.

The woman techie, who hails from Vijayanagaram district in Andhra Pradesh and was living in a working women's hostel, told police that the robber, aged around 22-25 years, spoke in Telugu.

A police official said the attacker fired a single round and the bullet pierced through the wall of the ATM machine.

Deputy Commissioner of Police K. Venkateswar Rao said a locally-made weapon was used in the crime.

Police said they were scanning the footage from CCTV cameras in and around the ATM.
