The Deccan police were recording the statements of the parents and close relatives of the deceased to determine what pushed Khan to take his own life.

A resident of Shivajinagar gaothan, Zameer was the only son of Gulabchand Kareem Khan, who owns the Suyog Complex on Jangli Maharaj Road. Gulabchand told the police that he had had no contact with his son for the past 20 days.

The police recovered two liquor bottles, one empty and one half-full, a mobile phone, and one pesticide bottle from the Indica car. "The car was reportedly parked in the basement of Suyog Complex building and was unused for the past six months owing to technical snags," said Zameer's uncle Altaf.

Sub inspector S S Salunkhe, who is investigating the case, said: "The post-mortem of the body was conducted at the Sassoon General Hospital. The body is about 15 to 20 days old. The viscera have been preserved for further investigations. We have not found injury marks on the body of the deceased and that it had turned black indicates that a poisonous substance may have been consumed."

What has intrigued the police is that the family had not registered a missing complaint even though many days had passed. "When I last met Zameer, he sounded stressed but didn't reveal anything," said Zameer's cousin Ashfaq.

Some from the family said Zameer was in the habit of staying away from home for days without informing them. Even in this case, he had told them he was leaving for Goa, and had not contacted them.

The body was discovered on Saturday around 11.30 am by mechanics engaged by the family to tow away the car for repairing. The mechanics called Altaf to inform about a body lying in the car.
