Following a heated argument with his family, a 70-year-old man travelled nearly 707 km from his hometown in Hyderabad and reached Dadar railway station in Mumbai to commit suicide. However, after he lay down on the tracks at platform number 6, a constable spotted him and immediately alerted the motorman of the approaching train, saving him on time.

According to police, Sudarshan Maheshwara, 70, who was fed up with his family members, reached Mumbai on Monday morning. Satish Menon, inspector at Dadar RPF, said that around 1:19 pm when the Kasara – CSMT fast local arrived at platform number 6, Maheshwara lay down on the tracks on the CSMT end to commit suicide. Luckily, a constable named Diwan Singh and some of the passengers standing on platform numbers 5 and 6 spotted him and alerted the motorman by waving their hands at him. Thereafter, Singh got down on the tracks and dissuaded Maheshwara from taking the extreme step. He then took him to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) unit of the station.

Menon further said, “We counselled Maheshwara and even informed his son Venkatesh about the matter. We also enquired about his medical history. We called up a family friend, who stays at Bhilwara, and asked him to take Maheshwara to his residence, till the time his son arrived.” Sources said that earlier Maheshwara worked in a Mumbai-based cotton mill. After retirement, he shifted to his native place at Bhongir in Hyderabad.
