It was girl power all the way at the silent protest march yesterday. Twenty-odd girls aged between 12 and 20 took to the stage at Azad Maidan, dominating the protest in their own firebrand way.

The speeches they gave not only reiterated the demands, but also threatened the state government of the protest moving to Delhi (towards the Centre) if it failed to give what was being sought. This happened before CM Devendra Fadnavis announced the sops.

All the girls echoed the five main demands of the 15 given to the government - the accused in the Kopardi gang rape be hanged, reservations in jobs and education, amendment of the atrocities Act, construction of a Shivaji statue on a priority basis, and giving appropriate rates for crops along with completely waiving off farmers' loans.

The girls' speeches also had references to Shivaji's history, with the youngsters warning the government that the community, carrying the king's legacy forward wouldn't think twice before picking up swords, if the need arose.
