Sharapova, who has been struggling with injury since her Wimbledon semi-final defeat against Serena Williams, was hoping to make her return at the Wuhan Open.

But she was forced to retire with new left forearm injury after playing just three-sets against unseeded Barbora Strycova.

It is still doubtful whether Sharapova will play in WTA finals at Singapore, which is scheduled to take place from October 23.
