Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju's latest appointment as Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) legal panel head has come under strong criticism from Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) secretary Aditya Verma, who has slammed Katju's post terming it to be a violation of the Constitution of India.

"I want to draw your kind attention of the violation of Article 124 (7) of the Constitution of India which reads as follows: No person who has held office as a judge of the Supreme Court shall plead or act in any court or before any authority within the territory of India," Verma wrote in his letter addressed to the Chief Justice of India, a copy of which has already been sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Katju has been appointed by BCCI to advise on the SC verdict, based on implementation of Justice Lodha committee recommendations. The petitioner in the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing scandal in 2013 asked for stern action against the BCCI official who accompanied Katju for press conferences.

Speaking to mid-day from Guwahati on the sidelines of a felicitation event on Sunday, Verma lashed out. "How can the BCCI official accompany justice Katju during his press conference? It's contempt of court. This BCCI official must face the music for this act," he said.

Verma also described justice Katju's recent statements as unfortunate, the latter who had termed SC's verdict as 'unconstitutional and illegal'. "It is even more unfortunate that justice Katju is giving interviews to the media voicing his opinion of the SC verdict. This is very unbecoming of a retired Supreme Court Judge. Justice Katju has brought disrepute to the office of Supreme Court judgeship," alleged Verma.
