Mateen confesses, cops not convinced

While accused says he got the supari from Anwar Sheikh, the latter denies it; phone records show Mateen would have been near Dadar at the time J Dey was shot in Powai

As investigation into MiD DAY senior journalist J Dey's daylight killing deepens, cops are busy trying to corroborate the varying versions of the two persons who were picked up for questioning in relation to the killing.

Confessed: Mateen Sheikh (face covered) claims to have shot J Dey
and was paid Rs 70,000 for the assignment

The substantiation of competing claims comes as the Mumbai police are not fully convinced of accused Mateen Sheikh alias Iqbal Hatela's confession.

Mateen claims to have shot Dey dead last Saturday at the behest of a man called Anwar Sheikh. He says that it was Anwar who was in the Maruti Zen, coordinating with him and another man Raja D, who allegedly aided him in carrying out the assault. The car was parked opposite the scene of crime when the shootout occurred.u00a0
But cops are skeptical of Mateen's admission, as Anwar has claimed that he was not part of the assassination plot and has no idea about the killing. He has also alleged that he does not know of anyone called Raja D, creating confusion around the testimonies.u00a0u00a0

u00a0According to Mateen's confession, Raja D, his co-accused in the case, had taken the weapons with him after the killing. He and Raja were each paid Rs 70,000 for the assignment, but Mateen gave Rs 30,000 to Raja, to treat his ailing mother, he claims. Whereas Anwar says he is unaware of anyone called Raja D.

Fishy phone records
Cops are doubtful of his claims even more because he is not able to provide them with an accurate description of the incident that would explain his whereabouts. As per the details gleaned from Mateen's phone records, on the day of the attack, he was at Jogeshwari at 2 pm and at Dadar an hour later, even as the killing took place between 2.30 pm and 3 pm. According to the police, it is not possible for him to have committed the shootout at Powai, and reached Dadar immediately afterward.

u00a0Police are now trying to trace Raja D, a man who may be crucial in solving the mystery. Arup Patnaik, Commissioner of Police said, "We have kept watch on the two who were questioned. All are under our watch."
u00a0Meanwhile, police have questioned a number of people involved in the oil mafia. They interrogated Mohammad Ali, who is currently admitted in Nair hospital. Ali, an alleged aide of underworld don Chhota Shakeel, was arrested for the murder of oil kingpin Chand Madar last year but was shifted to the hospital after allegedly taking ill.u00a0
