District Collector asks Dr Vinayak More to submit a detailed report; More denies having received any such order, says probe is on
The district collector recently asked a civil surgeon to submit a report on the Maval incident, where women had allegedly undergone abortion after sex determination tests was performed on them on March 3.
The incident came to light after Varsha Despande of Lek Ladki Abhiyan, an NGO, was informed about the abortions by a primary health worker from the area. The civil surgeon and the police were allegedly passing the buck regarding registering of the complaint against the doctors involved in the case.u00a0

Collector Vikas Deshmukh took up the issue after Deshpande briefed him about the happenings.
Later, a notice was sent to Civil Surgeon Vinayak More, regarding the action he had taken under the PCPNDT Act. Ganesh Borhade, a volunteer of the Lek Ladki Abhiyan, sent the notice.
“I sent a copy of the notice to the collector, along with the message, stating that the abortions were performed after sex determination tests. He told me to look into the matter,” Deshpande said.
Deshmukh confirmed that he had discussed the Maval issue with Deshpande and asked the civil surgeon to submit a detailed report of the alleged malpractices.
“As per the information given by More, they searched a hospital where they suspected the abortions were performed. He also informed that abortions could have been performed through consumption of medicines. So we have asked him to submit a detailed report,” Deshmukh said.
But More said he had not received any such order from the collector asking him to submit a detailed report of the incident.
“Several people were inquired in this case, but we are yet to get concrete evidence whether sex determination tests were performed at a hospital or not.
There is possibility of the abortion pills were given to the women.
We had also inquired at various medical shop for the same.”
The notice
Any person under the PCPNDT Act/28 can issue a notice, if he or she feels that the authority in question has violated the act. Once the notice is served, the authority has 15 days to reply. In case of failure to reply, the person serving the notice can approach court following which the first accused will be the authority to whom the notice was served and the co-accused would be all those involved in violation of the act.
