Singer-composer-writer Ankur Tewari thinks it's really sad that radio sticks to filmi songs. So he's all set to stir a new note tomorrow

Remember the guy who sang Sabse peeche hum khade? Well, he's made sure he hasn't been left behind this time.

Ankur Tewari, who has films like Aao Wish Karen and Raat Gayi Toh Baat Gayi to his credit, has recently launched his new album Jannat.

The singer who's been into music since the age of six, talks to THE GUIDE:

Easy on your ears

The album has 11 tracks, which are all light and acoustic-based. I have composed, written and sung all the numbers.

The songs have an easy vibe and you can easily relate to them. The album has been inspired by my past experiences; moments that I spent with family and friends.

We have not used a sequencer or digitally recorded any of the numbers.

All the songs have been recorded live along with the instrumentation. If you want to listen to the songs, tune into Radio One tomorrow at the morning show.

Genetic (sound) Engineering

My parents were music lovers. My love for music began when my dad gifted me a guitar. I started learning from a teacher, but he was very strict, so I quit his classes. I was a rebel and wanted to prove that I could learn music on my own.u00a0

Thereafter, I started listening to records, reading the Rock Street Journal and watching the pre-Grammy awards videos.

I kept playing, and gradually gained command over the guitar. My mood influences my choice of music.

The Beatles and Abba were a hit in my home, so I love their numbers. I also love the emotive numbers by Jagjit Singh and the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

No Filmi Fetish

Actually, I love the film music scene. But it's really sad that we only get to hear filmi songs on radio.

When I travel abroad, I listen to different varieties of music on radio channels, which is not the case in India.u00a0

We have become very capitalist, and only want to promote things that rake in the moolah.

That kind of thing stunts creativity. However, the response is quite good when I perform at a music concert or pub here. People do like to listen to all types of music.

Screen and Play

I have directed a film called Let's Enjoy, and written the screenplay for Mohit Suri's Crook.

Writing a screenplay and a song is the same. I mean both of them tell a story, but only the format is different.

A screenplay is 120 pages, while a song is a one pager. But the efforts, feeling and inspiration remains the same.
