Mayawati orders suspension of Pilibhit SHO

The SHO of a Pilibhit police station has been suspended on the orders of UP Chief Minister Mayawati shortly after the Election Commission took action against four senior officials in connection with the anti- Muslim speeches of BJP's Lok Sabha candidate Varun Gandhi.

The chief minister's order came after DGP Vikram Singh and Principal Secretary, Home, Kunwar Fateh Bahadur, who had been asked by Mayawati to look into the case, submitted their report, a state government release said last night.

The release said that the chief minister has directed the DGP and the principal secretary to ensure that nobody was allowed to disturb peace and that in case of any violation, immediate action should be initiated against whoever is responsible.

She also ordered that the model code of conduct should be strictly adhered to and that immediate appropriate legal measures be taken against those violating it.

With regard to the complaint that BJP candidate Varun Gandhi had violated the model code through his election speeches, the commission had yesterday ordered suspension of the Addition District Magistrate SS Kamal and the Additional Superintendent of Police Saurabh Kush.

The EC had also ordered transfer of district magistrate MP Agarwal and Superintendent of Police PRK Chaturvedi to non-election related posts.

Meanwhile, the district administration has begun investigations into two other complaints against Pilibhit BJP candidate Varun Gandhi, district magistrate MP Agarwal told reporters yesterday.

He said a probe had been started yesterday into a complaint filed by villagers on March 4 last alleging that Gandhi, already under fire for his speeches in Pilibhit, had given another inflammatory speech in Bisalpur and also distributed money among the voters.

On his directive, the SDM, Bisalpur, MS Akhtar yesterday visited the area and recorded the statements of the people in connection with the complaint, Agarwal said.

The police have also started an inquiry into a FIR filed on March 17 against Gandhi for his March 8 speech in Barkhera area of the district and the investigating officer took possession of all the records in this connection.

He also recorded the statement of the station house officer, Barkhera, who had filed the case. The Election Commission has already summoned a CD, the DM said.
