There is more bad news coming Ankeet Chavan's way. Officials in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) have indicated that the left-arm spinner, who was the highest wicket-taker in Mumbai's 40th Ranji Trophy title last season, may not get his tournament prize money from the association if found guilty of spot fixing.

The MCA had announced Rs two crore prize money for the Mumbai Ranji-winning team members and support staff, matching the prize money doled out by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). MCA’s prize distribution function is on May 29.

A top MCA official told MiD DAY: “As of now, the MCA hasn’t got any instructions from the BCCI regarding this matter. Once we get some official communication from the Board, the matter will be put up in the managing committee to decide on Chavan’s future as well as his Ranji Trophy prize money.”

The general consensus amongst the managing committee members is that Chavan shouldn’t get his Ranji Trophy prize money if found guilty. “If he comes out clean, then there is no issue,” said another MCA official.

MCA shocked
MCA joint-secretary Dr PV Shetty expressed shock. “This is really shocking. Ankeet is a hardworking cricketer. He has come up the ranks through his talent and hard way. So, this was something unimaginable. u00a0The MCA will go by its rules on deciding the punishment if found guilty,” Shetty told MiD DAY.

“He has done exceedingly well for the Mumbai Ranji team in the last u00a0season. If these three cricketers are proven guilty, then I don’t think anyone will ever have faith in cricketers. We don’t know what goes on behind the scenes,” added Shetty.u00a0
