Blitzkrieg Football Club claimed the third division Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) League with a 1-0 win over favourites West Zone United in the final at St Xavier's ground in Parel yesterday.
Blitzkreig FC players celebrate after winning the MDFA Div lll title yesterday.
Striker Angelo Fernandes, who scored the lone goal off a Bosco Pereira corner in the second half, was ecstatic. "This team is playing in the third division for the past three years. But it gives me immense joy that I joined the team only this year and we got promoted to the second division. Next year I will have to shoulder more responsibility," said the 23-year-old.
Asked about the idea of calling themselves Blitzkrieg FC, their captain Shashank Raorane said, "Three years back when we came to register our club with the MDFA we wanted a unique name. The name Blitzkrieg means 'lightning war', the strategy Germans followed during the World War II.
For others, winning the third division title might not be a great achievement, but for us winning the title from more than 170 teams in fray is more than satisfying as a skipper."
