Newly opened Melon Health Foods, fills a gap in Tardeo's food map, by stocking healthy low-fat eats, that keep you from blingeling

The melon is a super snack -- it's healthy and filling, so you don't binge on other junk food.

It's also a great source of not just Vitamin C, but also potassium and Vitamin B6 and is associated with myriad health benefits. So it comes as no surprise that a local health food store has been christened after the fruit.

A family-run enterprise, that was born when Manoj Shah, who worked as a pharmaceutical marketing professional for over 15 years, realised the need for locally-manufactured protein powders.

Telling us that the average diet simply does not provide an individual with the who-prescribed intake of protein, Shah who holds a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences degree, explains, "That is why I decided to introduce Balatein, a whey-based protein powder into the Indian market."

It was while working on this project that the family formed an alliance with nutritionist and dietician, Kinita Kadakia, whose counsel, claims 42-year-old Manisha Shah, "helped me shed 15 kilos over a year and a half."

Sharing that her diet-experience helped her understand what a chore it is to source healthy diet supplies in this city, Manisha says, "This is why we felt there was a need for a shop like this, where you can find all kinds of healthy eats under one roof."

Feeling healthier and happier herself, Manisha aspires to spread the word and offers us a Grilled, Spinach and Corn Sandwich her Sandwich-of-the-Day. Manisha says, "It's prepared with Nutralite instead of butter, and the spinach and corn are tossed in a light diet-salad-dressing before they're sandwiched between multi-grain or whole-wheat bread."

Melon offers free delivery within a 3 km radius, we are told, and these sandwiches, priced at Rs 30 each and prepared with three, rather than two slices of bread, prove to be a very satiating meal.

Manisha also prepares flavoured Paneers with low-fat milk (Rs 100 for 250 gms) and with this, she can also make you a Frankie (Rs 35), if sandwiches are just not your thing. We also enjoyed the sweet Garden Green Dhokla that Manisha prepares. Mildly spicy, this is a treat for snackaholics with a pack priced at Rs 35.

The store also stocks a variety of dry snacks ranging from the run-of-the-mill khakda to sugar-coated Amla, which Manisha says is a rich source of Vitamin C and special Flaxseed Mukhwas (Rs 40 for 100 gms).

"It is an after-dinner mouth freshener which aids digestion and lowers cholesterol. Our mixture contains melon seeds, almond flakes, aniseed as well as black and white sesame seeds,"she explains.

We sampled the, Special Veg Pizza Khakda (Rs 55) and though it bore absolutely no semblance to pizza, the roasted cracker was a nice, spicy snack all the same.

The Dry Fruit Kachoris (Rs 60 for 180 gms) were nice too, and though they didn't taste as delicious as the fried variety, but are a pretty good alternative if heated for a few minutes.

Interesting buys here include various blended multi-grain flours, a variety of whole grain breads and something called, Garlic-Methi Magic, which can be sprinkled as a seasoning and which, Manoj says, "helps combat cholesterol."

Aside from their own range of snacks and low-sugar sweets, Melon also stocks a range of diet-food that's available at supermarkets, but, as Manisha points out, "finding them all at the same place makes your shopping easier."
