The mentally disturbed man, Anil Yadav (25), who was bashed up by certain Mulund residents last Thursday after they mistook him for a robber will have to undergo a surgery costing Rs 60,000 to fix the crack he suffered on his ankle during the attack. Meanwhile, the Mulund police nabbed at least six locals on Saturday for the brutal assault. The arrest comes after MiD DAY's report on how the innocent man was stripped, thrashed and paraded in undergarments by over-suspicious locals. Following the report, the Mulund police had registered an FIR against the assaulters.

After going through the video footage of the incident sought from MiD DAY, the cops have arrested Ismail Sayyed and five of his associates who were granted bail, while Ismail was sent to judicial custody by the Bhoiwada holiday court on Sunday.

"Ismail and others spread fear in the minds of residents by telling them they had seen robbers roaming the area in the night. After going through the footage, we arrested all of them," said a police officer from Mulund police station.

Meanwhile, Anil was taken home by his family, which resides in Mira Road. "We were on our way to file a missing complaint when the paper vendor told us about the pictures of my brother-in-law in MiD DAY. After reading the paper, we found out he was admitted to the MT Agarwal hospital in Mulund, and we brought him home. The doctors suggested an operation on him for a crack in his left ankle, which will cost us around Rs 60,000. Anil, who is mentally disturbed, is still in a state of trauma," said his brother-in-law Shiv Shankar Yadav.

The family has decided to send Anil to Jaunpur in UP, their native town, after the operation. "There is no one to take care of him here so we want him to go back home to Jaunpur to his wife and their two-year-old daughter who will tend to him," said Yadav.

The incident
On February 1, some residents of Khindipada, Dargah Road, Mulund tied Anil Kumar Yadav aka Guddu (25) to a tree, pounded and paraded him in his undergarments, after finding him roaming on the streets. The residents, who were gripped with fear after rumours of a gang of robbers working the neighbourhood, had also started patrolling in the night with lathis and swords. The video footage of the atrocity was made available to MiD DAY by a local NGO and we had published grabs from the footage in our edition on February 2 ('Paranoid locals tie suspect to tree and thrash him'). Yadav's family revealed later that Guddu is mentally unsound and had wandered off to Mulund.

Taking cognisance of the issue, the Mulund police registered an FIR against unknown people under Sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous, hurt against unknown people).
