After missing several deadlines, the VAG metro corridor finally sees a glimmer of hope with trial runs scheduled in the third week of April

Metro trial run may begin this month

Mumbaikars living along the 11-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) route will be one of the first few in the city to catch a glimpse of the much-awaited metro trains. According to highly placed sources in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the trial run for the metro line along the route is expected to begin in the third week of this month.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) plans to start the inspection of the VAG corridor by July. “The Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) of Indian railways will first see the trial runs of these trains at the car depot and on a stretch along the corridor. The exact date of the trail run has not been finalised but it will start some time this month,” sources said.

The electrification work and the Over Head Equipment (OHE) work is already in progress on the 8 km stretch between Versova and Marol, where the trial run will be conducted. The trial run will go on for about three months, following which the CRS inspection has been scheduled. The 11.07 km VAG metro corridor is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2,356 crore, will be the first metro corridor in the city and will facilitate west-east connectivity.

Number game
Reduced travel time: The entire 11.07 km distance can be covered in 21 minutes as against the present 90 minutes.
Less pollution: The project will ease vehicular traffic and cut down pollution. It will provide rail-based access to MIDC, SEEPZ and other commercial developments.

What is RDSO?
Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) is an ISO 9001 certified research and development organisation under the Ministry of Railways. It functions as a technical adviser and consultant to the railway board and zonal railways. The organisation looks after the design and standardisation of railway equipment and problems related to railway construction, operation and maintenance.
