It's tragic that it takes a celebrity to truly throw the spotlight on a pressing issue, but let's expect a plethora of reports on the dengue menace as Vidya Balan has been diagnosed with the ailment. The actor, who just returned from the US, has been advised to rest for at least 10 days.

While Balan's celebrity status will ensure there is more focus on the scourge, which seems to be spreading rapidly across the the country, it's imperative that people become aware about preventive measures.

We need to step on the gas pedal when it comes to creating awareness on the issue of dengue prevention. The city's civic body has been running a couple of campaigns but they need to be much more aggressive to ensure widespread success. A celeb's name may add to the recall value, so our authorities could consider approaching popular actors or athletes to publicise preventive measures in informative campaigns.

As laypersons, we now need to have a non-negotiable approach to cleanliness. The Swachh Bharat campaign may be too big and political a canvas — what every person needs to ensure is to keep the immediate surroundings clean and maintain the same approach at work too.

Strict fines for polluting cities are the need of the hour. Extra efforts should be taken to check functioning of construction workers across the numerous infrastructure projects in the city, as they tend to leave stagnant pools of water at their work sites. These filthy pools are the breeding ground of mosquitoes.

Residential societies need to up the ante on the cleanliness front too. There's a need to empty all artificial containers used to store water. Unnecessary water storage, in plastic cans, broken flowerpots and plastic bottles is an absolute no-no. Dengue is everybody's business. The best way to forward is to fight the bite.
