mid-day editorial: Crooks belong behind bars, not in hospital beds

Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal is all set to enjoy the comforts of a private hospital. Authorities who have to decide where to send him are busy passing the buck, in a tiresomely familiar game. Bhujbal was shifted to Bombay Hospital from JJ Hospital recently for a medical procedure, followed by a battery of medical tests.

Two hospitals are now fighting over a scan report. Bombay Hospital says that it has submitted a scan report to JJ while the latter denies having received it. The JJ hospital dean, who is responsible for taking a call on whether to keep Bhujbal there or send him back to jail, denies receiving the report.

As the accusations fly back and forth, it is evident that the old tactic of the rich and powerful using medical ailments to stay out of jail, is still in operation. This edit is not specific to the Bhujbal case. This is about a pattern — once a person with connections is about to be sent to jail, he or she mysteriously develops a life threatening illness that will keep him in relative comfort in a hospital. There is never any clarity about what that illness really is and justifiable skepticism about whether the accused really needs treatment or a prolonged hospital stay.

When even the most gullible has seen through this ploy, why does it continue? It results in bitterness in the layperson who is already disillusioned with a system that has different rules for people. The medical profession is also smeared because of a few bad eggs, as medical professionals are seen in cahoots with the powerful, enabling them to elude punishment with bogus ailments.

It is high time that authorities nip this ‘out of jail’ sham in the bud and keep the well-heeled and connected behind bars not in hospital beds.
