mid-day editorial: Don't flush good work down the drain

A recent report in this newspaper stated that the next time joggers at Carter Road want to relieve themselves, they won’t have to look too far. An eco-friendly, solar powered urinal named ‘Susloo’ will be coming up near Otters Club at Bandra (West). Apparently, the urinal will be made using recycled tetrapak and the units will be fire, water and termite-resistant.

The report adds that Susloo would have solar panels to channel electricity to the main lights, emergency lights and exhaust fans in the unit. It is an entirely green toilet in keeping with our ‘go’ green (pun intended) credo.

Bio toilets are indeed the need of the hour — they have proved to be a viable solution for the poor at Bharat Nagar in Bandra too. Given the general paucity of usable toilets in the city, any initiative to increase this public convenience is welcome.

However, what the authorities need to ensure is that these toilets are user-friendly.

Even in this report, while the public expressed their happiness that the tony promenade was going to get loos, it is often the usability that is in question. While in most occasions, these public toilets are too filthy, sometimes they are in a decrepit state. And very often, they are simply inaccessible because for they are locked. Frequent reports of locked loos have appeared in this newspaper. Although they are made using taxpayers’ money, they remain unavailable for months over petty disputes such as who will inaugurate the toilet blocks!

But the public also needs to realise that the responsibility of maintaining hygiene in these units also rests on them. Since this city is always on the move, the need of the hour is to nurture more innovative efforts such as the Susloo and treat these units with respect.
