mid-day editorial: Don't lose your health just to lose weight

Soon after Aamir Khan's inspirational weight loss story — for the upcoming film Dangal — surfaced, social media was abuzz with various 'quick weight loss' ideas. The actor's dedication towards his films is stuff Bollywood lore is made of and the manner in which he went from 38 per cent body fat proportion to 9 per cent in five months is awe inspiring.

However, it's necessary to pay close attention to the disclaimer that appears next to Aamir's story. The actor warns against drastic measures to cut fat and says, "I did it because of professional commitments, under the supervision of health experts. But I would not advise the same for any regular person. Slow and steady wins the race." He also stressed on the need to refrain from weight loss pills.

While Aamir's weight loss story may grab eyeballs, it is the cautionary note in the story that is important reading. People often tend to get 'influenced' by the fitness regimen or diet routines of their favourite celebrities. Be it the six pack abs or the size zero body fad, people have a tendency to imitate fitness trends of their idols and for that, they take to drastic measures.

But they must bear in mind that crash diets, rapid weight gain or fat loss often harm the body. These celebrities mostly undertake such strict regimen only because their film roles demand it, but they are all believers of healthy fitness routines and diets.

Also, like Aamir said, celebs mostly undergo such fitness regimen under the supervision of experts. The stars have access to the best fitness trainers, nutritionists and doctors. But that may not be the case for regular people. Trust age-old wisdom: sensible diet coupled with exercise is the way to good health and weight loss. Nix the quick fix method.
