Diwali is upon us and the city is already in celebratory mode. Kandils are conspicuous, lights blink cheekily outside homes and local shops have stocked up on Diwali gifting options.
But Diwali festivities also mean firecrackers and we are making a case for noiseless Diwali. Instead of adding to the woes of millions, including animals, why not make an effort to reduce both air and noise pollution this season! The anti-noise pollution movement has slowly and gradually gained traction and we wish it finds more takers. Festivities should be about lighting up lives to find joy, not lighting loud firecrackers, which impinge on the right to peace and quiet.

There have been attempts to communalise the issue, with rabble-rousers suggesting about a particular community being targeted during Diwali celebrations. Let us not fall into that trap and consider the bigger picture — happiness for all.
Those who choose to burst crackers must do so with discretion, common sense and a healthy respect for others. Although it’s easier said that done, but try to find open spaces fewer people or cars passing by. Avoid bursting crackers near hospitals as a mark of respect to patients. Any if all the above sounds impossible, at least opt for ‘silent crackers’ — those that emit light not sound.
Steer clear of bursting firecrackers on the roads as they cause distress to pedestrians as well as vehicles because they need to dodge and weave past the patakhas. It would be prudent of pedestrians to be careful about crackers on the streets too. Often these crackers go off at the feet of unsuspecting pedestrians causing horrendous injury. Also, be careful about Local ‘rocket launchers’ — those who burst rockets — need to be extra careful with the cracker.
Also, spare a care for stray animals on the streets.
Do not brand those espousing safety as wet blankets. In fact, bring the fizz into Diwali by being responsible and considerate. Let’s make it a happy Diwali for all.
