It looks like everyone is out to see who can whip up the most outrageous statements and grab the most eyeballs. A day after the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) issued a 48-hour ultimatum to all Pakistani artistes to leave India, the Samajwadi Party (SP) threw a challenge asking the MNS to send ‘suicide bombers’ to avenge the Uri terror strike, in which 18 of our soldiers were killed.
In a highly irresponsible and ridiculous statement, the Maharashtra chief of SP, Abu Azmi mocked the MNS, saying that since the party is so angry, it should send suicide squads to Pakistan, instead of giving ultimatums to Pak artistes.

Maybe Azmi does not know of the phrase, ‘silence is golden’, but he needs to learn that now. As a discerning and sceptical public, we know that political parties are making capital of the hot-button Uri issue. We salute the Indian soldier, whose sacrifice should never be forgotten. With all those sentiments uppermost, it is nevertheless important to see through sensational statements and nonsensical ripostes.
While one expects some bombast from politicians, especially those who are desperate to get back into the limelight, Azmi’s naïve, immature and dangerous response needs to be roundly slammed.
If Raj Thackeray’s ultimatum smacks of desperation, Azmi’s challenge is equally undignified. The public should not get swept up in any war of words between both these leaders. Instead, we can do so much more for our soldiers by contributing in some way to a defence fund, learning more about war memorials and, generally, by showing respect for the slain faujis in our own way.
Leave the time-wasting, rabble-rousing talk to the politicians.
