Officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) wrongly brought down an innocent man's family home in Naupada instead of demolishing the four-storey illegal structure next to it. A report in this paper cited how the TMC's 'mistake' cost a Naupada family their decades-old home. This in a city, where a home of one's own is considered the ultimate achievement, the Mumbai dream as some call it.
While TMC has termed it as an oversight, assuring the family of a new home, the owner suspects it to be a deliberate action as he had refused to give up his house and move, as other residents in the area had done, in the name of redevelopment. This is not a mistake, it is a catastrophe. How can the TMC demolish the wrong building? Before demolition, they must be aware about which building has got. They must have gone in with papers and specific instructions on which building to demolish.

If this is a mistake, like the TMC says, and this seems incredulous, then the victims should be compensated handsomely. Not only should they get their home rebuilt by the TMC, but also cash compensation for all the belongings lost during the demolition. They should also be compensated for all that they have to spend on alternate accommodation and the trauma that they are enduring.
The team responsible for this huge mistake needs to be taken to task. There have to be huge penalties slapped for this action. Whether it was an honest mistake or sabotage, we need a solid inquiry into this to throw up some answers, not just as lip service. This injustice cannot be righted a minute too soon. Bring the guilty to book and also start the process of rebuilding and compensation.
