Despite a spate of robberies at ATMs in the city, banks have not learnt any lessons. A survey conducted by MiD DAY revealed shocking security lapses at ATMs in the city. Thirty seven per cent of the ATMs visited did not have a guard in the vicinity and at 11 per cent, the guards were found sleeping.

A former SBI manager said that the RBI policy on ATMs states that there should be adequate security at ATMs.
The issue of safety at ATMs came to the fore after some untoward incidents in the city recently.

An ATM machine, weighing about 300 kg and containing Rs 10.5 lakh, was stolen from the Kasarwadi branch of the Union Bank of India in October. There was no security guard at the time of the incident.

In another incident, a professor was attacked in an ATM at East Street last month. Again, there was no guard.
u00a0When Vishal Jadhav (35), the sociology professor who was attacked, stepped into the SBI ATM on East Street on March 22 at 9.17 pm, little did he know what was in store for him. "I went to withdraw cash with my wife's ATM card, when someone who I thought was going to use the second machine there, suddenly attacked me," said Jadhav. He thought he was punched in the face, but actually his face was slashed with a knife, and his money was snatched. "There was no guard," he said.

In Jadhav's case, even the CCTV camera had not been working for two-and-a-half months, which was revealed only when the police asked the bank for the footage.
