The 17-time Grand Slam champion ultimately suffered a straight 4-6, 4-6 defeat at the hands of the Canadian in a match that lasted for one hour and 26 minutes.
The world number three was never in the game, making many unforced errors and showing a rather rusty performance.
The Swiss great, who was bidding for an 89th career title on Pat Rafter Arena, was for the second time in 11 innings defeated by Roanic.
With the win, Raonic has set a strong lead-in to the upcoming Australian Open.
