The GUIDE checked out a new eatery on JM Road, that offers mini-toasts with toppings

College students and shoppers who mostly hang out on JM Road can rejoice as a newly-opened eatery named Krostini has just opened shutters. With a menu boasting of well-done sandwiches and wraps, quirky smoothies and mojitos, light salads and fresh tarts, it fits perfectly as a hangout spot. The name Krostini is an eponym for the little toasts with varying toppings that Italians call crostini; which the restaurant owners prefer calling temptations.

We started with a Chocobahn (Rs 50), a chocolate and banana smoothie, in which the chocolate could've been a bit stronger to give the right balance. The yummy Marengo (Rs 60) is a pulpy juice made from orange, apple and alphonso pulp. All smoothies and shakes can be enjoyed with a scoop of ice-cream at an added cost of Rs 15.

After quenching our thirst and easing our stomach a bit, we took a look at the rest of the menu. The place also has a breakfast menu consisting of cereal, omelettes and sandwich combos, fresh cut fruits, teacakes and the like from 8 am to 11 am. Priced between Rs 40 to Rs 70, it is totally value-for-money.

Not wanting to give their specialty a miss, we placed an order for the Egginach Krostini (Rs 49), Mushroom Cheese and Black Olives Krostini (Rs 55) and Mushroom Basil Krostini (Rs 55). The Egginach made from slices of boiled eggs topped with liberal amounts of spinach on the toasted baguette tasted just average and should be given a miss. The Mushroom Krostinis were well done; the Mushroom Cheese Krostini was smeared with a mushroom and cheese paste while the Mushroom Basil Krostini had chopped and sauteed basil leaves.

The walls showcase tempting pictures of crostinis and tarts. Tempted, we asked for a few tarts (Rs 25 per piece) and were served with little pastry bases topped with cream, kiwi and papaya.

Krostini does not offer meat on the menu and sticks to fresh vegetables and eggs and plays around with mostly Mediterranean ingredients. The salads section sticks to using feta cheese, citrus fruits and pepper. Their sandwiches and rolls have an Indian touch to them with Paneer Tikka, Cheese Tikki and Masala Omelette finding their way in as fillings.

It was an entrepreneurship course that brought owners Apurva Sacheti and Subhobrata Sengupta together. The duo are running the place under a soft launch mode for the past week gathering feedback from customers and planning to formally open in a couple of weeks. For a light three-course lunch that doesn't pinch the pockets, this restaurant is a welcome option in the area. However, looking at the menu, we think breakfast is a better option.
