The city police registered two separate cases of rape yesterday. However, there were two common aspects in both the cases – the victims were minors, and that the rapists were known to the victims.
In the first case, a five-year-old girl was raped by her 17-year-old cousin on July 3 in DN Nagar, Andheri (West). According to the girl’s statement, around 8 pm when everyone was busy with a family function, her cousin took her to the kitchen of the ground floor house and forced himself upon her. After raping the girl, he banged her head on the wall, the refrigerator and threatened her of dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone.
The victim’s father was in Chennai at the time of incident. “When I returned home on July 4, I saw my daughter in a really bad condition. Upon enquiry, she narrated the ordeal that she had gone through. I immediately rushed her to Cooper Hospital, after which doctors called the police and a rape case was registered on July 5,” he said.
The girl’s condition was critical for the first two days, but now she’s out of danger and is responding well to treatment. “When we told her that we are going to take her home, she got terrified and started crying inconsolably. She said that she doesn’t want to go home. We hope that she recovers soon and forgets the incident,” he said.
Speaking to MiD DAY, an official from DN Nagar police station said, “We have arrested the accused. As he too is a minor, we have sent them to the children remand home in Dongri.”
17-year-old girl raped in Malvani
In the other incident, a 17-year-old girl working with a catering company was raped by her 21-year-old colleague in Malvani. On Saturday night Shailesh Sonavne called the girl saying that he needs five girls for a catering assignment. He told the victim that he has got four girls and needs one more. The victim reached Sonavne’s house, where his mother too was present. He then took the girl to a salt godown, where he raped her repeatedly through the night.
Sonavne even assaulted the girl, who managed to escape early in the morning and informed her parents about the incident. As the girl had sustained injuries, she was admitted to V N Desai Hospital in Santacruz. The hospital authorities informed the Malvani police about the incident after which a case was registered against Sonavne on Sunday. The accused was arrested yesterday, and has been charged under Section 323 (assault) and 376 (rape) of the IPC. He will be produced in the court today.
