The Eastern Freeway claimed yet another life, after a 34-year-old biker rammed into a police van on the highway late last night. The van belonged to a senior police inspector from Agripada police station.
Cops claim that the victim was riding on the wrong side of the road, and was allegedly drunk at the time of the accident

The Sewri police was informed immediately after the accident took place. Cops claim that the deceased, Ganesh Maruti Ingule, was riding on the wrong side of the road and was in an inebriated state. The accident took place around 11.25 pm yesterday, after which Ingule was rushed to J J Hospital.
Cops claimed that Ingule tried to evade the nakabandi put up at the CST end of the Freeway, and so went in the opposite direction. According to police officials, assistant sub-inspector Jalindra Kamble, who was driving the vehicle, along with operator Sudhir Shinde, were returning to Agripada police station after dropping off Senior Police Inspector Arvind Patil at Panjarpol Junction.
Speaking to mid-day, Kamble said, “As I was driving on the CST-bound lane of the Freeway, I saw a biker heading towards us. To avoid collision, I moved left, but unfortunately the biker too moved in our direction, which led to the crash.” The victim’s family, in their statement, said that Ingule worked with the Mumbai Port Trust and had left his Mankhurd home around 4 pm that day saying that he was going to work.
Senior Police Inspector Anil Sardal from Sewri police station said, “The victim was immediately taken to the hospital. He suffered injuries to his chest, thigh and head, but was declared dead before admission.” The police have booked the deceased under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code, along with sections 15 (2) and 177 of Motor Vehicles Act.
